Health and beauty retailer Superdrug has opened a shop in Guernsey, creating 15 jobs.

The store is located at the former Smith Street post office in St Peter Port. The building closed as a post office about 16 years ago and since then has been used as a pound shop and also a pop-up charity shop.

Peter Macnab, Superdrug's chief executive, said the store would employ 15 permanent staff, adding: "It's very important that we become part of the community and of course we try and use as many local services as we possibly can."

He said the company had received "incredible support" from the local community and the residents living near the store.

Mr Macnab said the company had visited the island in July last year to look for a suitable building and said it was "crucial" that the company had modern up-to-date stores on the high street.

"Space is at a premium on the island so we were very fortunate as this store had lain vacant for a number of years.

"It needed a bit of tender love and care but the team have pulled it off and we have an amazing store."
